A Month in the Life

April 6, 2017

What I'm loving this month: Big Little Lies soundtrack, a handbag to make heads turn, #girlboss-es and more.

Spring is in full swing here in Florida, and although I'm not thrilled about the noticeable rise in temperature, there's been a nice lingering breeze that reminds me we're still months away from the sauna that is a Florida summer. Whether you plan to spend the majority of your time outdoors or indoors, there's plenty to do in April.

Here are some of the things I'm loving and looking forward to this month.

Before the Nasty Woman, there was the Nasty Gal

I was introduced to NastyGal early in my college years, and although the fashion line's daring pieces aren't for everyone, the true-life story behind the brand's founder and CEO, Sophia Amoruso, is sure to make people from all walks of life cheer (note: I'm referring to her initial climb to the top ... this excludes her current financial battle). Unfamiliar with her former rags to riches story? Pick up her memoir, #GIRLBOSS, and join me in watching the premier of the Netflix series adaptation, starring Britt Robertson as Amoruso, on April 21.

The Bag That's Garnered a "Cult" Following

Not many brands leave a lasting impression quite like Cult Gaia. Its structured, almost architectural handbags are guaranteed to make people look twice. After seeing the Gaia's Ark - Natural clutch pop up on my Instagram feed numerous times (Sazan Hendrix, above, and Cupcakes and Cashmere seem to be big fans) I realized I need to get my hands on one. I plan to pair this with a breezy dress and mules, and hope to eventually add more of the brand's bags to my collection.

How to Fill The Big [Little Lies] Gap in Your Life

I was one of the many people who looked forward to HBO's miniseries Big Little Lies every Sunday night for the past couple months, and now that it's over, I'm left shaken (that finale!) and desperately wanting more. Perhaps the thing I missed most after the show ended was simply hearing the theme song at the beginning of each episode and the perfectly curated soundtrack as a whole (seriously, I've never heard a better mix of folk, rock and soul). Luckily, there are already plenty of playlists on Spotify to fill the void. Here's one I'm currently playing on repeat. I'm hooked on the theme, "Cold Little Heart" by Michael Kiwanuka, "River" by Leon Bridges and "Victim of Love" by Charles Bradley.

Career Advice from Fashion's Top Media Maven? Yes, Please.

The second after one of my colleagues suggested I read this book, I was ordering it and eagerly awaiting its arrival. I work in public relations, so fashion PR pro Aliza Licht's name is one I was already fairly familiar with ... but the internship, career and social media advice in her book, Leave Your Mark, is incredibly useful for college students and young professionals in all industries. Read it and get. that. promotion.

Easter Treats, Baskets and Brunch, Oh My

I've said it once, and I'll probably say it a million times more: I live for holidays. With Easter coming up in just over a week, I'm looking forward to making some "grown-up" Easter Baskets for my sister and best friends, whipping up a delicious Easter brunch, and making sweet treats, like the beautiful Spring Cupcakes with Sugar Flowers, above, for the kids in the family ... and myself, of course. Sugar has no age.

Give Your Morning a Makeover

I recently read an article on the Huffington Post listing 6 ways to finally become a morning person. I've read several articles along these lines in the past, but this one was my favorite, mainly because it included the brilliant idea of writing a morning "To-Do" list the night before and setting a morning goal. I've been struggling to get out of bed with enough time to enjoy my mornings, and I'm hoping this method helps change that.

What are you loving and looking forward to this month?

Four Days in Boston

March 16, 2017

I had been wanting to visit Boston for years, and since my cousin Natasha - who has been at Boston University for the past year and a half - is graduating and leaving the city this May, I knew I didn't want to waste anymore time before visiting and having her as my guide.
My sister and I flew up to meet her at the beginning of the month, and we couldn't have asked for a better person to show us around this beautiful city and introduce us to some of the best food in the area

A Month in the Life

March 8, 2017

What I'm most excited about this month: childhood stories come to life, spring trends, St. Patrick's Day and more.

I'm still finding it difficult to wrap my mind around the fact that it's already March. People always say that time goes by faster as you get older, and unfortunately, they aren't kidding. I mean, wasn't Halloween just yesterday?

Ever since I was a kid, I've always been a bit anxious about time - how fast it goes by, whether or not I'm making the most of it ... you get the picture. Growing up, my family always made sure we had something to look forward to every month, whether it was a vacation, a holiday, or even a new movie we couldn't wait to see. That helped my time-related anxiety a lot, and after going through a bit of a rut last year, I decided to revisit that strategy by getting some things on my calendar to get me excited for the time ahead. While we should always make it a point to live in the present, there's a ton of research proving that making plans and giving yourself things to look forward to makes you happier, and, in turn, healthier (basically, having a good time is literally what the doctor ordered).

That being said, I decided to create this series that shares some of the things I'm looking the most forward to every month. I hope it gives you some ideas and that you feel welcome to share the things you're most excited about, too!

DIY "Galentine's" Day Mugs

February 10, 2017

If you know me, you know that I pretty much live for the holidays - and yes, that includes "silly" ones like Valentine's Day. I'm not in a romantic relationship, but that's never stopped me from participating in the festivities, eating more chocolate and candy in a sitting than is ever appropriate, throwing back a bottle of two buck chuck, or giving a little something sweet to the people who hold a piece of my heart ... which is why, when my best friend Jess asked me if I wanted to decorate mugs for Valentine's Day to give as gifts, I immediately and enthusiastically obliged.

Over the last few months, I've grown increasingly appreciative of the strong women in my life. The love I have for the men in my life is just as strong (love you to pieces, dad!) but the reality is that my mom, sister and best girl friends are the ones who share my struggles and ambitions, and make me proud to be a woman (also, what would my dad do with a red and pink heart-adorned mug?) That being said, I decided to take these DIY mugs a step further and create small individual gifts for the leading ladies in my life. This was not only easy to throw together, but cost-effective, too (I purchased everything but the mugs at TJ Maxx, and you can buy most of the gift items in sets of 3-5, and just distribute them evenly). It was a fun way to throw some love into the air and work on my crafting skills with my bestie (shout out to Pinterest for the cute mug design ideas!)

Mugs: Threshold by Target, $1.99 - $5.99
Face masks, set of 5: $4.99
Lip balms, set of 5: $3.99
Nail polish: $3.99 each
Body wash: $1.99 each

I also plan to sprinkle in some Sweethearts for a nice #TBT to elementary school Valentine's Day parties :)
